Burleson High School band earns top UIL rating
The Burleson High School "Spirit of the Elks" Marching Band earned
the top rating (1st division) Saturday from all adjudicators during
the Region 7 University Interscholastic League East Zone Marching
Band Contest held here on Saturday, October 16. This is the
sixteenth UIL top rating the BHS band has received for marching
performance in the last seventeen years.
This year's Burleson UIL marching band show was entitled "H20 -
Element of Life." The musical program was based on material from
Beethoven's 5th Symphony. One of the visual highlights of the show
was the giant "water flower" bud that unfolded into full bloom
during the finale. The "H20" show will be performed at half-time
throughout the remainder of football season at all regular season
games.
Drum majors of the band are Josh Lovejoy, Cole Morgan, and Ashton
Pennington.
The show features soloists, Krystal Culbertson, mellophone, and
Brittany Howard, oboe.
The Region 7 UIL marching contest is held here each year on the
third Saturday of October. This level of music contest is held in
twenty-eight regions of the state. Twenty-one 4A and 5A schools
were represented at the contest held here.
During the region level contest, bands are rated according to a
rubric which clearly states the expectations for each rating: 1st
division-superior, 2nd division-excellent, 3rd division-good, 4th
division-fair, and 5th division-poor.
Because of the many schools and different classifications
represented in each region, and due to the geographic size of
certain regions, the region level contests are zoned. In Region 7,
the UIL region level marching band contest sites include Burleson
(East Zone 4A-5A), Glen Rose (Central Zone 1A, 2A, 3A), and Brady
(West Zone 1A, 2A, 3A). There are no 4A & 5A schools in the central
and west zones. The Burleson Centennial High School band performed
at the Glen Rose site, earning a 1st division rating on Saturday as
well.
In classifications 3A and 5A, bands which earn first division final
ratings at the region level may advance to area level contests next
weekend. The UIL has determined that only 1A, 2A, and 4A bands can
advance to area and state levels only on odd numbered years. 3A and
5A bands advance only on even numbered years. The Centennial band
will advance to the 3A area contest at Waco Midway stadium this
Saturday, October 23.
Because Burleson High School is now classified by UIL as 4A, our
band will not advance even though a first division rating of I was
earned on Saturday. Next year, the BHS band will have the
opportunity to advance to the area level contest.
At the area level contest, bands are ranked. One band from every
five participating schools at the area level will advance to the
state level contest to be held at the Alamodome in San Antonio in
November. The state marching contest for 3A schools will be held on
November 1, and the 5A contest will be held on November 2.
